Immortals of Aveum Struggles to Stand Out Among AAA Releases

EA and Ascendant Studios’ fantasy FPS Immortals of Aveum has faced challenges since its launch in August 2023. Ascendant Studios’ founder, Bret Robbins, believes that the game’s reception would have been better if it hadn’t been released during such a crowded period for AAA games.

High Competition in a Crowded Market

Robbins acknowledged that launching Immortals of Aveum in a year filled with other high-profile releases created tough competition. Games like Zelda, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Baldur’s Gate 3, Armored Core 6, and Starfield all contributed to the game getting lost in the noise.

Despite delaying the game for additional polish and optimization, the decision to launch in a saturated market impacted Immortals of Aveum’s performance. The PS5 version received a mediocre 69 on Metacritic, with a user score of 6.0. The Xbox version fared slightly better with a score of 76, while the PC release only managed a 65. In comparison, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Armored Core 6 received higher average scores on the PS5 platform.

Robbins remains optimistic about the game’s future, believing that Immortals of Aveum has the potential to become a sleeper hit. Drawing parallels to his experience with Dead Space, Robbins is confident that players will discover and appreciate the game over time.
