Rust – How to Switch Seats in Vehicles

As you explore the large island in Rust, you might find a vehicle or two that would be very useful. They will help you reach further places faster and will allow you to get more loot using the storage they usually have in the back.

However, there might be little things here, and there that might annoy you when it comes to vehicles. For example, maybe your companion just jumped from the wheel, and you have no idea how to switch seats to take over the car.

You might have also sat down in the wrong place on the boat, and you have to switch seats to actually control it. Well, most players would just jump out of the vehicle and try to mount the machine from the right angle.

Luckily, you can switch seats in Rust by pressing X on your keyboard. If you changed the key binds and X is doing something else, you can easily select a new key bind from the Options menu.

How to Switch Seats in Rust

To quickly switch seats in Rust, you will just have to press X on your keyboard. This also works in vehicles where all the spots are taken by other players. If you all were to press X at the same time, you would switch seats with each other.

Unfortunately, many players tend to switch their key binds for some of the more important things they want to do, and the X key bind might be doing something else for them. In that case, you will just have to go into the Options menu and change the key bind for changing seats.

Here is how you can input a key to use to switch seats in Rust:

  1. Open the Menu and go into Options, and then into Controls.
  2. Scroll all the way down to the Misc options and find the “Change Vehicle Seat” key bind.
  3. Press the space where the key is supposed to be and input your new key bind.

If you don’t want to go into the Options menu and want to quickly do it from the console, you can also do this:

  1. Press F1.
  2. Type in “bind ‘key’ swapseats” (Without quotation marks).
  3. Enter.

Instead of ‘key,’ you will have to write the key you want to use to switch seats. For example, if you wanted to set the original X key to switch seats, you would have to type “bind x swapseats” into the console and enter.

The only problem with this way to change seats is that you can’t select which car seat you are going to end up on. If you are in a car with 4 seats, there is a high chance you will go through all the seats before ending up on the driving one.

How to Switch Seats in Rust Console Edition

Switching seats on the Rust Console Edition is simpler but not as efficient as on the PC version.

To switch seats on Console Edition, you will need to look at a seat. It doesn’t matter if it is the one you are sitting on or an empty one, and press X or square to change your seat.

There is no simple button that you can press to instantly move from one seat to another without looking at a seat first. We are also not sure if you can change seats with other players if you are sitting in all the available spots.

Players cannot change the controls on the Console Edition of the game, so you will just have to get used to this mechanic.
