Fire Emblem Engage – How to Get & Increase Weapon Proficiency

In Fire Emblem Engage, a Unit’s ability to use certain weapons in battle is determined by their Weapon Proficiencies. These proficiencies also determine the Classes that Units can change into.

Each Class in Fire Emblem Engage has its own unique Weapon Proficiencies, meaning that changing a Unit’s Class will likely alter their Weapon Proficiency and the types of weapons they can use in combat.

What is Weapon Proficiency in Fire Emblem Engage?

Weapon Proficiency is an essential mechanic in Fire Emblem Engage because it determines the types of weapons that Units are able to use.

In order to change a Unit’s Class, Weapon Proficiency is a necessity along with the use of Master Seals or Second Seals. However, increasing the Bond Level between a Unit and Emblem is one way of gaining the necessary Weapon Proficiencies.

You can check the Weapon Proficiencies of a Unit by opening the Class Change menu through the Inventory and selecting the Unit you want to view. The current Weapon Proficiencies are listed on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

Each Class has its unique Weapon Proficiencies, and these proficiency levels range from D to S, determining the weapons’ strength that the Unit can use. For example, a Unit with D level Sword proficiency can use basic swords, while a Unit with S level Sword proficiency can use the most powerful swords.

There are three different icons displaying Weapon Proficiencies, and we’ve listed them below:

  • Gray icon – Unit has no proficiency in this specific weapon type, making it difficult for them to change their Class into types that use these weapons.
  • White icon – Unit holds standard Weapon Proficiency for this weapon type, which is usually inherited from an Emblem.
  • Blue icon – Unit’s natural Weapon Proficiency that gives them a bonus level for this weapon type.

How to Get & Increase Weapon Proficiency in Fire Emblem Engage

Bonding with an Emblem that holds the necessary proficiency is one way to gain a particular Weapon Proficiency for a Unit.

Increasing the Bond Level between the Emblem and the Unit can help gain Weapon Proficiency, along with various stat boosts and Skills. For instance, to change my Unit Clanne’s Class from the default class to Axe Fighter, I had to earn Weapon Proficiency for Axes by using Emblem Lief and raising their Bond Level to 2.

Not all classes will use higher-ranked weapons in the game, so you will typically, have to promote them into an Advanced Class to use more powerful weapons. The Sword Fighter class, for example, allows a Unit to use most basic to medium-powered Swords, while the Advanced Class Swordfighter gives access to S-tier ranked Swords.
