According to Bloomberg, the development of The Last of Us multiplayer game by Naughty Dog has been slowed down as many of its developers were reassigned to other projects within the studio. However, it’s important to note that the game has not been cancelled. This news comes as Sony-affiliated Bungie (known for developing Destiny) evaluated the game and reportedly raised concerns about its ability to engage players for long periods of time.
The project has already been in development for more than four years and was initially planned to be part of The Last of Us Part II. As it became more ambitious, Naughty Dog subsequently decided to make it a standalone game. Naughty Dog seems to have confirmed the report on Twitter, acknowledging that the game needs more time to be completed.
While this delay may cause concerns among fans, the good news is that Naughty Dog is working on a new single-player game, and they are quotes as saying that their team will continue to work on the multiplayer game project. “Our team will continue to work on the project, as well as our other games in development, including a brand new single-player experience; we look forward to sharing more soon.”
Naughty Dog has previously teased that they plan to share more information about The Last of Us’ multiplayer game later this year. As things stand, it’s not yet clear if the studio’s recent announcement will impact its planned reveal.
At the time of publishing, no release date has been announced for The Last of Us multiplayer game. Stay tuned for more updates as we have them.
