Exploring the vast areas of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is rewarded with the opportunity to solve some occasionally creepy and obscure puzzles. Here’s how you can retrieve King’s Scales in the game.

Tears of the Kingdom – obtaining and collecting King’s Scales

The King’s Scale acquisition is necessary to overcome a key puzzle, where an arrow with the ‘mark of the king’ must be shot through a tear drop to proceed in the main quest, Clues to the Sky.

The ‘mark of the king’ referred to in the riddle is the King’s Scale. [1] The player must speak to King Dorephan to obtain it, while working their way to the Water Temple. King Dorephan has secluded himself away in a secret chamber close to Zora’s Domain, near a waterfall. [2] A guide on the whereabouts of King Dorephan is available to assist players to reach that area.

During their efforts in completing that quest, King Dorephan provides five King’s Scales. The in-game description suggests these scales originate from King Dorephan’s forehead, so it is reasonable to assume there will be availability for more later on. [3] Also, speaking with King Dorephan allows the opportunity for contact if any more scales are required.

Individually, adding King’s Scales to weapons in the game enables the weapons to gain five additional attack points. Although it does not make a sizable difference, it is useful nonetheless. [4] Moreover, once players complete the Water Temple, King Dorephan relocates to the throne room in Zora’s Domain and is available to be approached for additional King’s Scales. Dorephan replenishes the supply when it runs out; he remains the only source for players to obtain King’s Scales in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. [5]
