Honkai: Star Rail Beats Genshin Impact in Overseas Revenue

Honkai: Star Rail, a mobile game developed by MiHoYo, has surpassed Genshin Impact in overseas revenue for the month of May, according to Sensor Tower data. Honkai: Star Rail saw a significant increase in revenue, reaching 3.7 times the figure from April. The game performed exceptionally well in Japan, generating 38% of its overseas revenue, followed by the USA with 21%. This success propelled Honkai: Star Rail to the top of the international revenue charts, pushing Genshin Impact into second place.

The success of Honkai: Star Rail in May is a reflection of its blockbuster performance since its release at the end of April. The game achieved a record-breaking 20 million downloads within its first two days on the market. This impressive feat also helped MiHoYo surpass NetEase to become China’s second highest-grossing mobile publisher, with Tencent being the only company ahead.

One of the key factors contributing to Honkai: Star Rail’s strong performance in May was the introduction of the Jing Yuan card pool on May 17. This update led to a significant boost in daily overseas revenue, allowing players to unlock the new character Jing Yuan.

Despite Honkai: Star Rail’s success, Genshin Impact experienced a decline in revenue. Appmagic data shows that Genshin Impact generated $53.8 million in May, representing an 18% decrease compared to April’s $87.7 million.

Other Games Making Waves

In addition to Honkai: Star Rail, two other mobile games witnessed significant growth in May. Whiteout Survival experienced a 29% surge in revenue, climbing seven spots to secure the tenth position in terms of overseas revenue. Tomorrow’s Ark also saw remarkable growth, with a 124% month-on-month increase, reaching the number two spot on the growth charts. The game accumulated over $700 million in overseas revenue during the month.

PUBG Mobile, on the other hand, claimed the top spot in the download charts with a 42% month-on-month increase, surpassing Honkai: Star Rail.

MiHoYo has been recognized as one of the top 50 mobile game makers of 2022.
