Destiny 2 will finally see stability improvements next season

Destiny 2 Faces Stability Issues: Bungie Addresses Concerns and Delivers a Roadmap for Fixes

Since the release of the Lightfall expansion earlier this year, Destiny 2 has been struggling to maintain stability. Players have been experiencing frequent disconnections from activities, leaving them frustrated and raising concerns about the game’s overall health. In a recent blog post, Bungie, the studio behind Destiny 2, acknowledged these issues and provided players with a roadmap for upcoming fixes.

The Increased Instability

Over the past few months, players have noticed a significant increase in disconnections during gameplay. Bungie’s official Bungie Help Twitter account has been regularly notifying players about emergency maintenance, leading to a sense that the game is becoming less stable than ever before.

Bungie’s Transparency and Explanation

Bungie addressed these concerns in their recent blog post, explaining that they had made substantial investments to improve the game’s stability during high-traffic events like expansion launches and raid races. The launches of both the Lightfall expansion and the Root of Nightmares raid were praised for their smooth player experience. However, these improvements caused unexpected disruptions to the game’s “Claims” service, which is essential for the game’s functionality.

The Issues with “Claims”

The “Claims” service in Destiny 2 processes gameplay messages, such as enemy kills and item pickups. These messages are sent to specific servers to ensure appropriate responses from the game. While the system now remains functional even under heavy loads, it no longer repairs itself properly, causing communication channels to break. This results in players encountering error codes like Weasel or Baboon. In extreme cases, Bungie has to take down the entire game to restore functionality.

Bungie’s Efforts to Fix the Problem

Bungie reassured players that addressing the issues with the “Claims” service is their top priority. However, they also acknowledged the complexity of the problem, indicating that it will take time to find a lasting solution. In the meantime, Bungie is working on processes to bring Destiny 2 back online more quickly when disruptions occur.

The Midseason Update and Season 22

In the upcoming midseason update, set to launch in a few weeks, Bungie will implement improvements to the game’s logging and alerting systems. This enhancement aims to prevent further stability issues and lay the groundwork for key solutions later in the year. Additionally, the launch of Season 22 on August 22 will introduce fixes to the “self-healing” problems within the “Claims” service, addressing specific areas where failures occur and allowing for automatic recovery.

Looking Ahead to Season 23

If the Season 22 patch proves successful, Bungie plans to continue making architectural improvements in Season 23, expected to start in early December. These enhancements seek to further stabilize the game and provide a better overall experience for players.

Restoring Faith in Bungie

Although the community’s patience has been tested, Bungie’s transparent blog posts like this one often restore some faith in the studio behind Destiny 2. Despite the upcoming The Final Shape expansion reveal in August, player focus is also directed towards the Destiny 2 Showcase on August 22. This event will not only unveil new content but will also determine if the game’s stability finally reaches a satisfactory level after months of turmoil.
