Classic mech-’em-up RPG Front Mission 1st Remake has landed on PC

1995 Turn-Based Mech RPG Front Mission 1st Arrives on PC

In exciting news for fans of mech-based turn-based tactics, the popular 1995 roleplaying game (RPG) Front Mission 1st is now available on PC. Following its successful debut on the Nintendo Switch last year, this release offers a new gaming experience for those craving something fresh after years of playing Battletech.

With its mature tone, Front Mission 1st stands out as a stunning example of 1990s Japanese RPGs. The game features two different campaigns that delve into a hot conflict between two powerful alliances, both equipped with their own mechs. While the game deserves serious attention for its intricate storytelling, it’s worth mentioning that the mechs in the game are called Wanzers. Please resist the urge to laugh, as this is a serious game with a captivating narrative.

Although I personally haven’t had the chance to play the game yet (even though a collectors edition for the Nintendo Switch taunts me from my desk), the reports suggest that the PC version offers a fantastic update. Fans of XCOM or Xenonauts will find an immediate sense of familiarity with the game’s pilot and Wanzer customization options, as well as the challenging missions requiring careful strategy.

As someone who has fond memories of Front Mission 3 (also receiving a remake), I recall the thrill of customizing my fictional computer’s wallpaper with various images found on the in-game internet.

This remake provides an excellent opportunity for fans to enjoy big stompy robot action. The Classic setting allows players to relive the nostalgia of the 1995 original, while the Modern mode introduces a mobile camera with twirling and zooming capabilities, as well as a fresh new soundtrack. Moreover, the game now offers selectable difficulty modes and other modern tweaks, making the overall experience more enjoyable.

If you’re interested in joining the pilots and their powerful Wanzers on their epic journey, you can find Front Mission 1st available now on Epic, GOG, and Steam for $35.
