Just Cause Mobile Development Halted and Game Taken Down from Digital Stores

The highly anticipated mobile version of the popular Just Cause game series, Just Cause Mobile, has suddenly ceased development and has been removed from digital storefronts even before its official release. The game was initially announced at The Game Awards in 2020 and had been available in early access in selected regions such as Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Unfortunately, the projected launch date of 2022 was indefinitely delayed, and the game’s early access was closed in February 2023. Now, it appears that the game will not be released globally.

According to a statement reportedly released by Ann Lou, the Just Cause Mobile community lead, the game has been taken down from digital storefronts and the official Just Cause Mobile Discord has been shut down. The statement, which was captured by Philippines-based site PinoyGaming, expresses the developers’ sadness and gratitude towards the fans for their support.

Reasons Behind the Shutdown

Just Cause Mobile joins the list of Square Enix games that have experienced sudden and unexpected closures with minimal notice. Square Enix, the publisher of Just Cause Mobile, has previously shut down other games such as Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, and Echoes of Mana. This pattern of closures has raised questions about Square Enix’s overall mobile strategy.

While Square Enix has seen declines in operating income and net sales, they have not announced any layoffs or restructuring plans. It is possible that the company is trimming down its mobile catalogue to focus on titles with broader appeal, similar to the approach taken by successful rivals like Supercell.

For players who were eagerly anticipating the release of Just Cause Mobile, the sudden nature of its shutdown is undoubtedly concerning. It remains to be seen whether Square Enix will continue to streamline its mobile offerings throughout the year.
