Xbox Series X users will soon be able to map keyboard keys to their controllers

Microsoft Explores Mapping Keyboard Keys on Xbox Series X

Microsoft is currently testing the ability to map keyboard keys on Xbox Series X through a beta program available to Xbox Insider members. This feature, if implemented, would enhance accessibility and versatility on the platform. The Xbox Insider Alpha patch notes announced the functionality, which is currently limited to the Xbox Adaptive Controller and the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. It is unclear whether this feature will be extended to standard Xbox Wireless Controller users.

The announcement provides instructions on how Xbox Insiders can utilize this new feature: “To get started, open the Xbox Accessories app > Configure > create a new profile or edit an existing one > select a button to map > choose Primary or Shift > then move over to the new Key tab“. However, users are not currently able to map every keyboard command and shortcut. The post explains, “You may only map a given controller button to a single key, along with any combination of modifier keys (Win, Shift, Ctrl, Alt). For example, you could map Ctrl+Alt+W, but not Ctrl+Alt+W+E”.

As expected in the beta stage, keyboard input support is limited and varies depending on the game. There is currently no comprehensive list of compatible games, but that may change in the future. A glitch has been reported where some titles display a “trial” tag if the functionality is claimed but not available. Additionally, the “learn more” button is not functional at the time of writing, but it is expected to be resolved soon.

The impact of being able to map keyboard key presses and shortcuts on the best Xbox Series X games remains to be seen. If this feature is fully released and supported, it could revolutionize how users interact with games on the platform.
