Project Zomboid – Best Fence to Use in Your Base

Having a secure base is crucial when defending against the undead in Project Zomboid. Without proper fences, your home is vulnerable to attacks. In this guide, we will explore the best fence options available to protect your base.

Best Fence To Use in Your Base in Project Zomboid

Fences in Project Zomboid offer significant protection and can be quickly constructed for small areas or to mark boundaries. There are nine fence types in the game, with five being metal and the rest made of wood. Each fence requires different materials and skills in Carpentry and Metalworking to build.

Installation steps for all fences are the same: right-click on a tile and select “Carpentry” → “Fence” → “Fence Name” or “Metalwork” → “Walls/Fencing” → “Fence Name”. However, building fences can attract zombies due to the noise they create, so caution is advised. It’s also important to note that zombies can still detect your presence nearby and attempt to attack you even through fences.

Fences will deteriorate over time as zombies attack them, so regular checks and maintenance are necessary. It’s essential to keep your fences in good condition to ensure your base remains secure.

Zombies can climb and attack fences, so be careful.

It’s important to note that improvised types of fences using car wrecks, crates, rain collector barrels, etc., are not included in our ranking of the best fences. Now, let’s dive into the top fence choices in Project Zomboid!

1. Big Pole Fence (Metalwork)

The Big Pole Fence is ideal for placing at the exit of your house or around its perimeter. Its height prevents zombies from climbing over it, providing excellent defense.

Since metal fences are more durable than their wooden counterparts, it takes more time and effort for the horde to break through. Additionally, the Big Pole Fence is the only fence that allows you to shoot or attack through it while still offering protection.

The main drawback of the Big Pole Fence is its construction requirements. To build this fence, you need a minimum Metalworking skill of level 7, 2 Propane Torches, 1 Welding Rod, 1 Welder Mask, 5 Metal Pipes, and 2 Scrap Metals. However, the benefits it offers make it worth the investment, even though achieving level 7 Metalworking skill may take some time.

2. Wired Fence (Metalwork)

The Wired Fence is a more accessible option compared to the Big Pole Fence. It requires 1 Propane Torch, 1 Welder Mask, 2 Metal Pipes, 1 Scrap Metal, 1 Wire, and at least a level 4 Metalworking skill to construct.

The upgraded version of the Wired Fence, the Big Wired Fence, offers improved durability but lacks a defense strategy. You cannot attack the undead from inside this fence. However, the Wired Fence allows you to shoot and kill zombies using melee weapons, making it an excellent choice for farms or bases.

Keep in mind that zombies can still jump over the Wired Fence, so dealing with a large group of zombies can be challenging.

3. Wooden Fence (Carpentry)

The Wooden Fence is widely regarded as one of the best fence options in Project Zomboid.

One of its main advantages is its accessibility. With just a level 2 Carpentry skill, 2 Planks, 3 Nails, and a Hammer, you can quickly construct a Wooden Fence. These resources are relatively easy to obtain in the early stages of the game.

The Wooden Fence allows you to interact with zombies from a safe distance outside the barricade. Whether you use guns or melee weapons, you can effectively deal with threats without putting yourself in danger.

However, Wooden Fences have two significant drawbacks: limited durability and low height. Zombies can climb over them easily, and large groups of zombies or persistent attacks can break down Wooden Fences quickly. Consider this when planning the long-term defense of your base.

4. Sandbag Wall (Carpentry)

Similar to the Wooden Fence, the Sandbag Wall requires basic resources, primarily Sandbags.

You can obtain Sandbags by right-clicking on a sand tile and selecting “Take Some Sand”. Make sure you have Sandbags and a Shovel in your inventory.

The Sandbag Wall is particularly useful for quickly creating temporary barricades when you find yourself in an open area without natural cover. It provides a solid barrier against the undead and allows you to fortify your position rapidly.

However, the Sandbag Wall does not provide effective protection as zombies can easily climb over it. When facing zombies, it’s recommended to use long-range weapons and maintain a safe distance.
