Sony Reveals PlayStation 5 Has Surpassed 40 Million Units Sold

Sony PlayStation 5 Surpasses 40 Million Unit Sales

In an exciting announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has reached a remarkable milestone, surpassing 40 million units sold. This impressive achievement comes after the console’s launch in November 2020, with players around the world eagerly purchasing over 40 million consoles since then. Notably, back in February, Sony shared that 32 million units had been shipped, indicating that an additional 8 million consoles have been sold in just five months.

PS5 Continued Success

Despite experiencing a relatively quieter year, Sony’s PS5 has managed to thrive. The release of God of War Ragnarok during the winter months significantly contributed to the console’s success, enabling it to hit the 32 million mark. However, in terms of first-party PlayStation releases, Horizon Forbidden West’s Burning Shores DLC and MLB The Show 23 have been the only offerings for PS5 this year. It’s worth noting that Horizon Call of the Mountain, also released this year, is a first-party game exclusive to PSVR2.

Impact of Third-Party Games

While there may have been a shortage of first-party releases, the arrival of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XVI last month exclusively on PS5 undoubtedly bolstered console sales. Although not a first-party game, the highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, set to receive its own special limited edition PS5 console bundle, is expected to further drive hardware sales.

James Ryan, SEI President and CEO, Acknowledges the Achievement

SEI’s President and CEO, Jim Ryan, shared his thoughts on this significant milestone for the PS5 in a recent statement. He highlighted the challenges faced during the console’s launch amid a global pandemic, including disruptions to supply chains. Despite these hurdles, the PS5 is now well-stocked and able to meet the pent-up demand from eager gamers. Ryan expresses his gratitude to the PlayStation community for their patience and support in making the sales milestone of 40 million units possible.
