Gran Turismo Movie Delayed Slightly, New Release Date Set

The Gran Turismo Movie Release Date Pushed Back Due to WGA and SAG-AFTA Strikes

The ongoing strikes led by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTA) continue to have a significant impact on the entertainment industry, including the film sector. One such project affected by these strikes is the highly anticipated Gran Turismo movie, which has now been delayed.

The New Gran Turismo Movie Release Date is Just a Few Weeks Later

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the Gran Turismo movie will now hit theaters nationwide on August 25, two weeks after its original premiere date. However, there will be exclusive sneak previews held from August 11 to August 13 and August 18 to August 20. Sony, the studio behind the film, disclosed that these special screenings are an experimental approach to generate positive word-of-mouth as promotion by union members is prohibited during the ongoing strikes.

A Sony spokesperson further commented on the situation, stating, “The stars can’t promote the film but the audience can.”

Prior to the delay announcement, Sony had already offered certain PlayStation Plus members the opportunity to watch the movie in advance at select theaters.

It’s important to note that the adjustments to the Gran Turismo movie release date are part of a broader rescheduling initiative undertaken by Sony. Several other films have also been pushed back, including the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which has been postponed indefinitely. Additionally, Kraven the Hunter will hit theaters ten months later than planned, on August 30, 2024, while the untitled sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been moved from December 20, 2023, to March 29, 2024.

The biographical film based on the popular Gran Turismo video game series is being helmed by Neill Blomkamp, the renowned director behind District 9. The screenplay is penned by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin. The star-studded cast includes Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet, and Djimon Hounsou, among others.
