How to Build a Roof in Project Zomboid
The crafting mechanics in Project Zomboid offer various ways to build structures, including roofs, which are crucial for protection. If you’re unsure how to construct a roof in the game, this guide will walk you through the process.
How to Build a Roof in Project Zomboid
Building a roof in Project Zomboid involves constructing frames and stairs to reach the floor above, and then selecting the appropriate materials for the roof. For a wooden roof, you’ll need to use the “Metalworking” option and choose “Metal Roof” or the “Carpentry” option and select “Wooden Floor” to fill the entire floor. Essentially, the roof consists of wooden floors or metal roofs. The floor of the second level serves as the roof of the first level. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the process:
Prepare Tools and Materials to Build a Roof
There are two types of roofs in Project Zomboid: wooden and metal. Here’s what you’ll need for each type:
For Wooden Roof:
- Hammer: Required for any wooden construction.
- Nails: Each wooden floor and other wooden structures require nails.
- Planks: Each wooden floor requires one plank.
For Metal Roof:
- Propane Torch and Welder Mask: Necessary for building a metal roof.
- Small Metal Sheet and Scrap Metal: You’ll need one small metal sheet and one scrap metal for each metal roof.
Build Wall Frames
Wall frames are essential for creating a border and covering your base. Without them, it’s impossible to build a roof. Follow these steps to build wall frames:
- Determine the size of your storage room, usually 6×6 or 8×8 tiles.
- Replace the grass tiles with wooden floors to create a foundation.
- Right-click and select “Carpentry” => “Wall” => “Wooden Wall Frame” to wrap the frame around the foundation. Each wooden wall frame requires level 2 Carpentry skills, 2 nails, and 2 planks.
Note: Metal wall frames can be used instead of wooden wall frames, but they are more expensive and unnecessary for this purpose. If you need a door, select “Carpentry” => “Door” => “Door Frame” to build one.
Additionally, fortifying the room with wooden or metal walls is recommended for added protection. Right-click on the wooden wall frame and select “Create Wooden/Metal Wall Level 1/2/3” to add wooden walls.
Build Stairs
To reach the top and build the roof, you’ll need stairs. Here’s how to build them:
- Find a spot near your storage room that is accessible.
- Right-click on the ground and select “Carpentry” => “Stairs” to construct them. Building stairs requires 15 nails, 15 planks, and level 6 Carpentry skills.
Build the Roof
Once you have completed the previous steps, use the stairs to go to the top floor and follow these instructions:
For a wooden roof:
- Select “Carpentry” => “Wooden Floor” to fill the entire area with wooden floors, creating the roof.
For a metal roof:
- Stand on top of the base and right-click.
- Select “Metalworking” => “Metal Roof”. Note that this option requires reading Metalwork Magazine Vol.1, which can usually be found in post offices.
Note: Metal roofs may offer an aesthetic appeal, but they are more expensive and their additional benefits are unclear compared to wooden floors.
Alternatively, if you already have a one-story house and want a better vantage point, you can fill the top of the house with wooden floors. Follow these steps:
- Find a spot at the side of the house to place stairs.
- Stand on the top and place wooden floors to cover the area.
By following these steps, you’ll be able to build a roof in Project Zomboid. If you have any suggestions or feedback, please let us know in the comment section below!
