Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag can no longer be bought on Steam

Ubisoft Removes Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag from Steam, Fueling Remake Rumors

In an unexpected move, Ubisoft has silently taken down Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag from the Steam store, triggering speculation about a potential remake.

While the updated Steam store page of the 2013 open-world pirate adventure still displays trailers, images, and reviews, the option to purchase the game has mysteriously vanished without explanation. However, current owners can still access and play the game, as reported by PC GamesN.

Earlier this year, rumors started circulating that Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag was being considered for a remake. According to insider sources, the project was said to be in its early stages, with the involvement of Ubisoft Singapore—the studio renowned for its ocean technology development—aiming to enhance the stealth gameplay.

The reason behind the removal of Black Flag from the Steam platform remains unclear as Ubisoft has chosen not to comment or confirm anything so far.

It’s worth noting that a similar delisting confusion occurred last year with Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD. The store page was updated, leading to uncertainty for game owners regarding its playability and potential buyers’ intentions. Ubisoft eventually clarified that such restrictions would only impact DLC and online features for delisted games. As of now, Liberation can still be purchased, albeit with the notice that “online features are no longer available for this product.”

Speculations suggest that Black Flag might face a similar fate, potentially losing its online multiplayer functionality. However, this remains mere speculation without any official confirmation.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the next highly anticipated release in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, scheduled to launch on October 5 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. Ubisoft has already announced its ongoing work on several other titles for the series, including Assassin’s Creed Codename Red.
