Rovio Stockholm Appoints Johannes Mang as Head of Studio

Rovio Stockholm, the renowned video game developer, has announced the appointment of Johannes Mang as its new head of studio. With over 21 years of experience in the industry, Mang brings a wealth of expertise and leadership to the role. He has previously held prominent positions at industry heavyweight Electronic Arts, where he played a crucial role in the development of the company’s first self-operated free-to-play title, Battlefield Play4Free. During his time at EA, he oversaw a group of four studios as COO, including Pogo.com and Play4Free.

Speaking about his new role, Mang stated, “My passion lies in live services, as it perfectly combines the creative aspects of video game development with the technological and business aspects.”

Soaring to New Heights

Prior to joining Rovio, Mang served as the general manager at Remedy Sweden, an AAA developer known for its popular titles such as Alan Wake, Control, and Max Payne. In his new role, Mang will be leading the development of “advanced casual” games, aligning with Rovio’s mission of creating player-focused experiences with long lifecycles. He will be responsible for both creating new game titles and further enhancing the success of the immensely popular Angry Birds 2.

Expressing his enthusiasm for joining Rovio, Mang stated, “I’m thrilled to return to the fast-paced world of mobile games. The opportunity to work on a large-scale live service, entertaining millions of players daily while continuously innovating, is truly intriguing. When I met the talented team in Stockholm, I immediately felt a connection. I am excited to take Angry Birds 2 to new heights and collaborate with Rovio on their next hit game!”

The announcement of Mang’s appointment comes shortly after Rovio’s acquisition by Sega for a staggering $775 million. With his extensive experience in both live-service and AAA titles, Mang’s presence hints at Rovio exploring new directions and reaching new levels of success in the future.

Rovio has consistently proven itself as a top player in the mobile game industry, securing a spot on the list of top 50 mobile game makers of 2023.
