The Last of Us Part 2 PS5 Remaster Rumors Gain Credibility
Recent developments suggest that the long-speculated remastered version of The Last of Us Part 2 for PS5 could be more than just a rumor.
A LinkedIn job description from a Naughty Dog developer, discovered by fans and shared on Twitter by Ilia, gave further weight to the existence of the remastered edition. The developer’s position as “Lead Outsource Artist” involved overseeing the production of environment art assets, weapons, and interactive props for two iconic titles: The Last of Us: Part One and The Last of Us 2: Remastered.
However, it is worth noting that the job description has since been amended to exclude any mention of The Last of Us 2: Remastered, leaving only The Last of Us: Part One.
Insights on The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered
The rumors surrounding a remastered version of the 2020 game have been circulating for some time now. Composer Gustavo Santaolalla also hinted at an upcoming remaster during a guest appearance on a Blender podcast earlier this year, mentioning an “improved version” in the works.
While Naughty Dog has yet to officially announce a PS5 upgrade for The Last of Us Part II, the studio has a history of upgrading and porting their games. The original The Last of Us for PS3 was remastered for PS4, which received additional updates for PS4 Pro. In 2020, the game underwent further improvements to reduce load times before being completely remade for PS5 in 2022. Additionally, it was also ported to PC, although the initial launch encountered some issues. Furthermore, an update was released for The Last of Us Part II allowing it to run at 60 frames per second on PS5.
Given this precedent, the rising sales of both The Last of Us games due to the HBO series, and the likelihood that The Last of Us Part III is still several years away, it is plausible that a more substantial PS5 upgrade, along with a potential PC port, is currently in development. Sony has also demonstrated a preference for premium PS5 upgrades with titles such as Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Death Stranding Director’s Cut. Rumors of a PS5 remake of Horizon Zero Dawn have also surfaced.
