YuYu Hakusho Review – IGN

Netflix recently released its live-action adaptation of YuYu Hakusho, which follows the trend of bringing classic mangas and animes to life in the visual medium. Previous adaptations, such as Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, and Rurouni Kenshin, have struggled to capture the essence of the original work. However, Akira Morii and Kazutaka Sakamoto’s take on Yoshihiro Togashi’s supernatural shonen manga manages to deliver a delightful retelling that captures the charm of the original.

The series immediately grabs the audience’s attention as it opens with teenager Yusuke Urameshi, who is shocked to find his spirit separated from his lifeless body. Yusuke is offered a second chance at life in exchange for investigating a demon infestation in the human world. This premise sets the stage for an adventurous story that unfolds with gusto.

The series visually presents demonic entities as truly dangerous, with each violent encounter carrying weight and tension. This adaptation skillfully blends practical and digital effects to create grotesque character designs that match the tone of the original work. It embraces the humanity of YuYu Hakusho, allowing viewers to mourn Yusuke’s loss while immersing them in the melodrama of the characters.

While the core duo of Yusuke and Kuwabara is well characterized, the supporting cast feels underdeveloped due to the condensed nature of the series. The fast-paced storytelling leaves little room for the emotional depth and historical context that the manga is known for. However, the series excels in capturing the essence of its two main characters and their unique relationship.

The rapid character growth and condensed story arcs may hinder the impact of the emotional moments, but it’s evident that YuYu Hakusho shines when it focuses on the dynamic between its leads. Although the supporting cast is underutilized, the series showcases potential for further exploration in potential future seasons.
