Tracking a Year in Video Games

I’m seeing a lot of rookie numbers in the comments. Pathetic.

1,166 hrs.

72 games played.

Top Games Played in 2023

#1: Tears of the Kingdom – 208 hrs.
#2: Disney Speedstorm – 129 hrs.
#3: NSO – Game Boy Advance

177 hrs. played in June.

That doesn’t even count my total play time on 3DS and PS5, which is probably another 200 hours or more.

On 3DS, I beat Dragon Quest VIII which was about 80 hrs among some smaller eShop titles.

On PS5, I beat Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Jak II, Tchia, Spider-Man, and I think at the beginning of the year was when I played through both Psychonauts games and the entire Sly Cooper quadrilogy, but I honestly can’t quite remember. I may have started both series in late 2022. If you count games played for the first time even if they didn’t release this year, Psychonauts 2 and Sly 2 take the cake. Absolutely adored everything about them.

Favorite Games

Favorite Switch game? Probably got the most enjoyment out of MK8 DX with the Booster Course Pass.

As far as games that actually released this year on Switch, my favorite is probably either Kirby’s Return to Dream Land DX or Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Honorable mentions include: Super Mario RPG, Clive ‘N’ Wrench, We Love Katamari, Sonic Superstars, and Dragon Quest Monsters

I hardly sunk any time at all into WarioWare, so I can’t fairly rank it. I also haven’t picked up Hogwarts Legacy yet, which may very well have been one of my favorites, hard to say.

Biggest disappointments were Tears of the Kingdom and SpongeBob: The Cosmic Shake

No single game was absolutely mind-blowing or anything, but I was more than content as there was a good spread of really solid titles throughout the year.

Looking Ahead to 2024

2024 is already shaping up to potentially be even better, with Paper Mario: TTYD and Penny’s Big Breakaway being my two most anticipated. I also think Luigi’s Mansion 2 gets way too much hate and am looking forward to replaying it alongside Mario vs. DK and the Splatoon 3 DLC. Hopefully there will be plenty more surprises in store.
