Initially, Mario wasn’t intended to have a last name, but it turns out that his last name is Mario. The story of how he earned this moniker is quite interesting. In the early days of arcade games with Donkey Kong, Mario was actually known as Jumpman. However, after a landlord by the name of “Mario” Segale confronted Nintendo’s team about overdue rent, he ended up being the inspiration for Mario’s full name.

In an interview with Game Informer, Miyamoto expressed amusement at the idea of the plumber duo having the last name Mario. The 1993 movie makers arrived at this conclusion because of the game’s title, “Mario Bros.” However, at that time Miyamoto stated that Mario had no last name, and the same was true for Luigi.

Even when people asked voice actor Charles Martinet about the character’s last name, he also confirmed that it was indeed Mario. This occurred at San Diego Comic-Con in 2012. Then, in 2015, during the Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary festival, Miyamoto contradicted his earlier statement and confirmed that Mario’s last name was indeed Mario.

So, now you know Mario’s full name. And while we’re on the topic of Super Mario characters, you might be interested in learning more about who Peachette is.
