Soapbox features enable our individual writers and contributors to voice their opinions on hot topics and random stuff they’ve been chewing over. Today, Kevin remembers how Stardew Valley kept the spark alive and prepped him for living with his partner…

Love in the Time of Long Distance

Long distance relationships are not easy, that is a fact. My girlfriend Lima and I were in a long-distance relationship and only managed to spend time together once every one or two months. It was tough, but worth it. However, what really helped us was finding something we could both enjoy. For us, that was playing Stardew Valley together.

Not Love at First Play

When I initially tried playing Stardew Valley on my own, I just couldn’t get into it. Despite loving the art style and gameplay, it didn’t click with me. Yet, after Lima suggested we play together, I discovered that two players could farm together online at the same time. This feature ended up becoming a lifeline for our relationship.

A Growing Love and Farm

As we farmed together on our joint virtual farm called Texacago, we bonded by dividing tasks equally and working together. It turned out to be great practice for when we started living together in real life. We shared a virtual bank account, and learned how to communicate and divide responsibilities effectively through the game. In many ways, it prepared us for sharing a life together.

Love Springs Eternal

We played Stardew Valley together for hours, even completing all the content available in the game. This shared experience made the transition to living together much easier. Additionally, it showed us that gaming can strengthen the bond between partners in a unique and special way.

Our Stardew Valley farm may have ended, but the memories and experiences we shared in the game will last forever. Now, we’re ready for more adventures in games like Haunted Chocolatier. It’s an experience I’ll always cherish.
