Nintendo Switch 2 speculation ramps up again as 4K support spotted in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door’s code

Speculation Surrounding Nintendo Switch 2 Intensifies

Could the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 have support for 4K resolution? Recent discoveries within the codebase of the latest Switch game, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, suggest that this may be a possibility.

Dataminer RibShark uncovered a section of code referencing a 3,840 x 2,160, or 4K, resolution within the game. RibShark commented, “There seems to be code for handling 4K resolutions in the new Paper Mario TTYD remake. No idea if this is normal for Switch games or not but I thought it was interesting.”

Following this revelation, speculation has been circulating on social media regarding the implications of this discovery. Some speculate that the Switch’s successor could potentially support 4K resolutions and even enhance existing Switch games through backward compatibility patches.

However, it’s crucial to approach this information with caution, as the 4K resolution support may simply be for generating high-quality promotional material and press screenshots. Similar strategies have been employed in the past for titles like Nintendo Switch Sports.

While details about the Nintendo Switch 2 remain uncertain, company president Shuntaro Furukawa hinted that the moniker “Nintendo Switch 2” is appropriate for the upcoming hardware. Shareholder Q&A sessions from the previous year also suggested the possibility of backward compatibility for the new system, potentially paving the way for enhancement patches and higher resolution support for existing games.
