With Bungie’s announcement of a reboot to the classic game Marathon comes questions from fans old and new. Some might ask “What is Marathon?” and others might wonder if it’s tied to Bungie’s other popular franchises, Halo and Destiny 2. As an Apple Mac-exclusive FPS game when it was first released in 1994, Marathon serves as a spiritual predecessor to both franchises, but this new release will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, and PC. Following the game’s debut during the PlayStation Showcase 2023, fans want to know more about its release date, story, supported platforms, and more.
Marathon Release Date Speculation
Although Bungie has not officially announced a release date for Marathon, their website states that the game is currently in development. While players may have to wait until 2024 or 2025 for the release, it’s also possible that the game may need additional time in development before it’s ready for players. Bungie’s CEO, Pete Parson, has previously stated that a non-Destiny game will be released by 2025 which could mean a potential release of Marathon before that time.
Marathon will be a sci-fi PvP Extraction Shooter that is joined by other popular similar shooters like Escape from Tarkov and Warzone 2’s DMZ mode. Players must survive different rounds among other players for riches and fame. The game has persistent zones with changing environments and worlds throughout various runs. This will be Bungie’s first game other than Destiny and is a welcome change for fans seeking new content from the video game company.
What is the Marathon’s Story?
The year is 2850 and Marathon is set on the planet Tau Ceti IV. A massive ghost ship hangs in a low orbit over the planet, and over 30,000 souls residing on the planet have disappeared. The premise of the game revolves around clone technology that permits a person to shift their consciousness from their body to new, synthetic bodies. Players become runners and will venture into unknown places in a fight for fame and infamy while they loot mysterious artifacts, long-dormant Ai, untold riches, and more.
What Platforms Is the Game Going to Be On?
Many players might expect Marathon to be a PlayStation exclusive, given Sony’s acquisition of Bungie, but Bungie has confirmed that Marathon will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, and PC. The game will include full support for crossplay and cross-save, similar to Destiny 2. That means players can save their progress while playing on different platforms.
