Skautfold: Usurper Mixes Metroidvania with Lovecraftian Horror

Learn more about Skautfold: Usurper from the game’s solo developer, Steve Gal.

Talking Skautfold: Usurper with the Game’s Creator

The creator of the Skautfold series shares insights on Skautfold: Usurper, the second installment in the horror series. What sets Skautfold apart is its unique approach of incorporating different genres into each game. While Skautfold: Shrouded in Sanity offered a Souls-like experience, Usurper takes on the metroidvania genre. Now, Xbox users can immerse themselves in the gothic and unsettling universe of the Skautfold series with Skautfold: Usurper.

When asked about the motivation behind the series, the developer explains, “I had always dreamed of making my own games, but I realized I needed to start with smaller projects to learn about game design and development. That’s how I came up with Skautfold, a series that explores different characters and genres.”

A Dark Alternate History

The events of Skautfold: Usurper take place in an alternate history where two major empires, the British and Dawn empire, rule the world. However, Lovecraftian forces have been actively influencing historical events since the year 1000 AD. The story begins when a massive alien structure lands in the heart of London, releasing Lovecraftian creatures into the world. The player enters the game at this turning point.

An Innovative Guard System

To make Skautfold: Usurper stand out in terms of gameplay, the developer introduced a unique guard system. This system combines a shield and stamina, resulting in a distinct combat rhythm that emphasizes risk and reward. Rather than relying solely on healing, players are encouraged to actively engage with enemies and adopt offensive and defensive strategies. Understanding the intricacies of the guard system is essential for survival and an enjoyable gaming experience.

Additionally, the atmosphere and creature design in Skautfold: Usurper are worth noting, as they often surprise players.

A Standalone Experience

Although Skautfold: Usurper features several characters from its predecessor, players can confidently jump into the game without prior knowledge of Skautfold: Shrouded in Sanity. The game tells its own story and offers important setups and hints for both the future of the Skautfold series and its sequel series, Granser. Exploring the map thoroughly will reveal additional hints and details for attentive players.

Before concluding, the developer expresses gratitude for the support received and hopes players will enjoy the game.

Skautfold: Usurper, ported to consoles by Red Art Studios, is now available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
