What we can expect in Genshin Impact 4.0

We’re Getting Closer to the Release of Genshin Impact’s 4.0 Update and the New Region Fontaine

Exciting details on the upcoming region have been revealed, giving us a glimpse into the city of Fontaine.

Separation of the Citizens

The latest livestream teaser has showcased two contrasting areas within Fontaine. One area is pristine and inhabited by the affluent citizens, dressed in fashionable attire and enjoying the luxury of the upper class. This part of the city has an aura of ignorance towards the struggles of the lower classes, creating a stark divide. On the other hand, the lower city resides in the sewers, where the poorer inhabitants live in abject conditions with noticeably inferior clothing. This segregation within Fontaine is reminiscent of other divided cities in well-known games. It is important to note that the teaser predominantly highlights the more appealing aspects of Fontaine, with a mere glimpse into the less desirable areas. There may be additional industrialization and pollution within the city.

Melusines, the ‘Mascot’ of Fontaine

In the livestream, Alice introduces the Melusine, a race native to Fontaine, as she describes their characteristics. The Melusines are known for their diligence and strong sense of justice, making them ideal for roles in law enforcement. The specific Melusine featured in the teaser possesses distinct features such as pink and white fur, pointed horn-like ears, wing-like appendages on her back, and a tufted tail. She is seen wearing a blue police uniform. While it is speculated that Melusines are the Aranara counterpart of Fontaine, we cannot confirm this until the release of the region. The former Hydro Archon’s servants, the Oceanids, used to fulfill a similar role until they rebelled and left Fontaine.

Technology and Steampunk Themes

Based on encounters with native NPCs, it is evident that Fontaine is a technologically advanced region. The teaser briefly showcases an automaton walking the streets, reinforcing the presence of mechanical creations within the city. Additionally, boat transportation is shown, indicating an absence of sails and reliance on engine power. These features suggest the existence of advanced technology and potentially steampunk-inspired aesthetics in Fontaine. NPCs have mentioned the Fontaine Research Institute, a scholarly institution specializing in Kinetic Energy Engineering. Unlike Akademiya, this institution focuses solely on research and development and does not govern the citizens. However, a disastrous experiment has caused significant damage to the structure of the institute.

The Exciting Diving Feature

One of the most highly anticipated features in the upcoming update is diving. In the teaser, Aether (the Traveler) is seen seamlessly diving into the water, introducing a new dimension to exploration. Underwater exploration allows for seamless 3D movement, enabling players to swim deeper or towards the surface, move forward, backward, or strafe to the sides. This unique ability cannot be replicated by Anemo characters, making it a valuable addition to the game. It is unclear whether a breathing system will be in place, but the speculated presence of the Hydrograna may assist players in this regard. Combat underwater is limited, with Aether seen wielding water slashes to attack and deploying shields for protection. The slicing movements can also be utilized to solve puzzles and unlock chests. As of now, it seems that only the Traveler in their Hydro attunement can access this feature, but there is hope for other characters to utilize it in the future.

What to Expect

With the arrival of the new region, we can anticipate the introduction of new characters. While only a few have been confirmed, such as Lyney, Lynette, and Charlotte, it is exciting to imagine the diverse cast of characters that will populate Fontaine.
