How to defeat Grym and use the Forge

Using the Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3

Once you reach the Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3, understanding how it works can be a bit confusing. Additionally, you’ll have to face the challenging boss Grym. But don’t worry! Here’s a guide on how to use the Forge and defeat Grym in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Exploring the Grymforge and Ancient Forge Regions

Before you can access the Adamantine Forge, you’ll need to traverse through the Grymforge and Ancient Forge regions in Baldur’s Gate 3. Along the way, keep an eye out for Moulds and Mithral, as they can be found scattered in these areas.

For example, I found Mithral directly north of the Adamantine Forge after breaking open a large blue stone. Just be prepared for an ambush by Magma Mephits, but they are relatively easy to defeat.

Using the Adamantine Forge

When you finally reach the Adamantine Forge, follow these steps:

  1. Insert any Mould you have into the Mould Chamber.
  2. Place your Mithral in the Crucible in the middle.
  3. Pull the Forge Lever on the south side to make the entire platform descend to the lower level.
  4. Head to the east side and spin the Lava Valve.

Note: Before spinning the Lava Valve, make sure to take a short rest and ungroup your party. Each member should be positioned on a different circle, with one near the lever that controls the Crucible hammer and one on the Crucible itself.

Defeating Grym in Baldur’s Gate 3

A Cheesy Technique to Defeat Grym

Defeating Grym can be quite challenging, but there is a cheesy technique that is both fast and reliable. Spells and arrows might not be enough since Grym has 300 health and can easily wipe out your party in just a few hits.

The best strategy I found is to lure Grym to the middle and pull the lever to slam the Crucible hammer onto it. This will incapacitate any party member at the Crucible, so make sure to disengage and get off the platform if possible.

Grym puts a status called Prime Target on whoever dealt the last hit, so have the character on the Crucible hit Grym to lure it to the middle. I recommend using Wyll’s Eldritch Blast because, at level 5, he can fire two Eldritch Blast attacks, which increases the chances of hitting. Position yourself near the edge of the Crucible to ensure that Grym is more centered under the Crucible hammer.

After luring Grym to the center and taking a hit, use disengage to avoid the Opportunity Attack and jump onto the Moulding Chamber. From there, instruct a party member to pull the Forge Lever, which will bring down the Crucible hammer. This will leave Grym with 180 health and trigger the spawn of four Magma Mephits on the west side of the stage.

While Grym is knocked prone, focus on taking out the Magma Mephits. To deal more damage to Grym, you’ll need to activate the lava and pull the Forge Lever again. Grym won’t sustain damage if you swing the Crucible hammer without the presence of lava on the field.

It’s important to note that Grym is resistant to various types of damage. Here’s a list of everything Grym is resistant to:

  • Slashing
  • Piercing
  • Bludgeoning
  • Acid
  • Thunder
  • Necrotic
  • Fire
  • Lightning
  • Cold
  • Psychic
  • Poison
  • Radiant
  • Force

Since Grym is resistant to almost all types of damage, using the Crucible hammer with lava is the only way to defeat it. Once Grym has been struck by the Crucible hammer with lava present, it will gain the status Superheated, which makes Grym extremely vulnerable to Bludgeoning damage. This is where my Monk’s unarmed and staff attacks came in handy, as Grym takes half damage from Slashing, Piercing, Acid, Thunder, Cold, and Psychic damage. However, I strongly recommend using Bludgeoning damage to end the fight quickly.

After hitting Grym for a few turns, I lured it back into the middle and, with lava surrounding us, pulled the Crucible hammer, ultimately killing it even when it had 150 HP left. Two of my allies fell during the process, but once the fight was over, I turned on Turn-Based Mode and rushed to help them back up.

And that’s how you defeat Grym! Now you can collect your newly forged gear and discover even more equipment. You can also begin searching for Infernal Iron to continue your endeavors with Karlach.
