In Search of the Chest of the Mundane in Baldur’s Gate 3

In Baldur’s Gate, adventurers can discover a wide range of treasures, some with impressive names and others that may seem rather mundane. However, when it comes to useful loot, the name isn’t always an indicator of its value. A prime example is the Chest of the Mundane. Despite its ordinary name, this chest can significantly simplify your life in the game. But finding it is no easy task. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly where to locate the elusive Chest of the Mundane in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Finding the Chest

Disliking the burden of being encumbered by excessive loot is a common frustration in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, the Chest of the Mundane offers a solution to this problem. To locate this valuable item, you must search the Arcane Tower in the Underdark.

Accessing the Arcane Tower

There are several routes to reach the Arcane Tower. Its majestic structure looms over the western part of the treacherous Underdark, a considerable distance west from the Selunite Outpost. Study the map screenshot above to locate Astarion, who can be found near the front door of the tower.

If you encounter difficulties reaching this area, refer to our comprehensive guide on how to navigate your way through the Underdark. Venturing directly west upon arrival can be perilous, so for a safer alternative route, you may choose to disable the Eyes of Selune and make your way northwest towards the Myconid Colony. From there, you can proceed south to a waypoint that is not far from the tower. Confronting the Tower’s Challenges

From the Beach waypoint, head slightly north along the wooden scaffolding and ascend the slopes to the east until you reach the area outside the Arcane Tower. Here, you will face tactical battles against the tower’s turrets. These turrets will continuously launch projectiles that chip away at your health if you remain in the open. You can choose to disable the turrets or employ abilities such as Pass Without Trace to sneak past them and ascend the stairs. Personally, I prefer to dash between cover points for added speed and safety.

Once you reach the top of the stairs, pick the lock on the ornate door to gain entry into the interior of the Arcane Tower.

Locating the Chest within the Tower

Upon entering the Arcane Tower, you will encounter two additional turrets that must be disabled or sneaked past. Make use of the large stone columns in the chamber to your advantage. The turrets are positioned at the back left and right sides of the chamber, with an elevator located near the center.

Once you have neutralized the turret threat, exit through the door on the right side of the room to access the tower’s balcony. This is where you will find the coveted Chest of the Mundane. Consider assigning one of your stronger or less encumbered characters to carry it. The chest provides the practical function of significantly reducing the weight of any items you place inside it. This proves invaluable during long journeys into areas filled with valuable treasures, making them far easier to undertake.

Note: If you are feeling brave, you can send a nimble character like Astarion to claim the chest and make a hasty escape. This was my approach during an early playthrough. You can always return later when you are better prepared to explore the entire tower.
