Classic WW2 real-time stealth-tactics series Commandos is making a comeback with its sixth installment, Commandos: Origins. The game will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in the coming year.
Commandos first gained popularity in 1998 with the release of Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines by developer Pyro Studios. The game challenged players to lead a team of six commandos with unique abilities on covert missions behind enemy lines. The franchise went on to release four more games: Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty, Commandos 2: Men of Courage, Commandos 3: Destination Berlin, and Commandos: Strike Force, which introduced a first-person perspective.
Commandos: Origins, developed by Claymore Game Studios under Kalypso Media’s publishing, will bring back the classic isometric perspective of the series. Set before the events of the first game, players will embark on missions across European coastlines, icy Arctic plains, and African deserts to experience the story behind the formation of the commando squad.
“In the hushed shadows of history’s most pivotal moments, where heroes are born and legends are forged, a new chapter awaits,” explains Kalypso. “Whether it is a daring raid, a covert sabotage, or a courageous rescue mission – the Green Beret, the Sapper, the Sniper, the Driver, the Marine and the Spy will need to combine their skills to meet the most challenging tasks. Your mission can only be achieved through well-thought planning and the smart combination of stealth and destruction that come with the unique skillsets of this elite troop.”
Kalypso promises “more than 10” missions with core and optional objectives that can be completed in multiple ways. The game also offers two-player co-op support, allowing players to team up locally or online. Commandos: Origins will feature a modern user experience with precise and intuitive controls.
The game is set to release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC next year via Steam, Epic, and the Microsoft Store. It will be the first new entry in the series since Kalypso Media acquired the franchise rights in 2018. The publisher has previously released HD remasters of Commandos 2 and Commandos 3, but they faced criticism due to issues at launch, including the removal of Nazi imagery in Commandos 2.
