Chris Pratt’s Garfield movie gets its first trailer (yes, on a Monday)

Chris Pratt, known for his role as the voice of Mario, is set to bring Garfield to life in the upcoming The Garfield Movie scheduled for release next summer. The newly released trailer provides an insight into the origin story of the grumpy orange cat and his love for Italian food.

Despite the emotional beginning, the debut trailer promises an animated comedy filled with humor and excitement. According to the official synopsis from Sony Pictures, the movie will follow Garfield and his adopted brother Odie as they embark on a “hilarious, high-stakes heist” after an encounter with Garfield’s biological father, Vic, played by Samuel L. Jackson. The star-studded cast includes Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein, and Bowen Yang.

While the trailer seems to heavily rely on lasagna jokes, the visuals in The Garfield Movie are impressive. For fans of Jim Davis, there are numerous Easter eggs throughout the trailer, including references to Binky the Clown. Additionally, viewers can expect plenty of product placement from Olive Garden.

The Garfield Movie is helmed by director Mark Dindal (Chicken Little, The Emperor’s New Groove) and features a screenplay by Paul A. Kaplan, Mark Torgove, and David Reynolds (Spin City, George Lopez, Finding Nemo). The highly-anticipated film is slated for release on May 24, 2024.
