The release of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 in November 2022 gained attention for its high price and slower performance when compared to the RTX 4090. Fast forward to January 2024, and Nvidia has launched the RTX 4080 Super, which replaces the original RTX 4080. This new graphics card not only boasts slightly better specs, but it’s also priced lower at $999, down from the $1,199 of the original 4080.

Finally a Better Price

The launch of the RTX 4080 Super is a step in the right direction, especially considering the original 4080’s high price. However, the new Super version is still more expensive than the RTX 3080, which was priced at $699 upon its launch in 2020. Nonetheless, the reduced price of the RTX 4080 Super is much more reasonable and easier for consumers to afford.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super – Specs and Design

Similar to the rest of the RTX 4000 lineup, the RTX 4080 Super is built on the Ada Lovelace graphics microarchitecture. It boasts 80 Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs), totaling 10,240 CUDA cores, 320 Tensor cores, and 80 RT cores. In comparison, the RTX 4080 featured 9,728 CUDA cores across 76 SMs, representing a 5% increase in silicon.

The RTX 4080 Super also maintains the same 16GB of VRAM on a 256-bit bus, all while drawing a peak of 316W of power compared to the 308W of the original RTX 4080. Temperature-wise, the RTX 4080 Super peaks at just 64°C, similar to the original 4080.

Nvidia’s GPUs offer exclusive upscaling technology, with DLSS being a standout feature. DLSS 3.0, the new generation deep learning super-sampling tech for the RTX 4000s, upscales games from lower resolutions back up to the native resolution, and also employs Frame Generation to read image and motion data from games in order to generate new frames, improving frame rate.

However, while competitors like AMD and Intel also offer upscaling tech, DLSS remains superior in its upscaling capabilities and performance benefits.

Nvidia Geforce RTX 4080 Super – Performance

The RTX 4080 Super showcases exceptional performance at 4K resolution, particularly in games with DLSS and ray tracing. With the added Frame Generation tech, the GPU demonstrates significant gains in frame rate.

In synthetic benchmarks, the RTX 4080 Super performs well, displaying its lead over the original RTX 4080 and competing GPUs.

While the RTX 4090 still outperforms the RTX 4080 Super by a notable margin, the significant price difference makes the 4080 Super a much more appealing purchase.
