PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Reportedly Aims for 8K 60FPS

PlayStation 5 Pro Leaks Reveal Spectral Super Resolution Feature

Recently, leaked specs for the upcoming PS5 Pro have shed light on a new feature called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling (PSSR). This technology is said to aim for impressive 8K 60FPS resolutions, although achieving this on the PS5 Pro may pose some challenges.

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution is also aiming for 4K 120 FPS

According to internal documents obtained by Insider Gaming, Sony is setting ambitious targets for PSSR, aiming to deliver 4K resolution at 120 FPS and 8K resolution at 60FPS. However, it is important to note that achieving these benchmarks on the rumored PS5 Pro may prove to be technically challenging, suggesting that these goals are more likely to be met in future console generations.

The leaked reports suggest that the PS5 Pro will feature PSSR technology and has already demonstrated a 3840×2160 resolution capability. Sony’s ultimate goal is to achieve 4K at 60 FPS and 8K at 30 FPS on the upcoming console. There are some doubts surrounding the feasibility of these targets with the current SKD 9.00 hardware, despite its usual capacity for 4K resolutions.

Experimental testing of PSSR has been conducted on select first-party games by Sony. The tests included efforts to introduce ray tracing without compromising resolution. One unidentified game, known to reach 60FPS on a standard PS5, managed to maintain this frame rate on the PS5 Pro while incorporating ray tracing.

Another experiment aimed to achieve a balance between image quality similar to Fidelity Mode (1800p) and Performance Mode FPS (60 FPS). Typically, the game runs at 1080p and 60 FPS in Performance mode on a standard PS5, and at 1800p and 30 FPS in Fidelity mode. With PSSR on the PS5 Pro, the game was able to reach 1440p at 60 FPS.

While these leaks provide exciting insights into Sony’s technological advancements, the company has refrained from making any official comments regarding these rumors.
