Escape from Tarkov studio draws fan ire after locking new PvE mode behind €250 special edition

Controversy Surrounding Escape from Tarkov’s Unheard Edition

Escape from Tarkov developer Battlestate has stirred up some backlash from fans with the introduction of a €250 special edition, priced at €300 after tax. This special edition not only offers unique advantages that some are calling pay-to-win but also includes an exclusive co-op PvE mode that will not be accessible to those who purchased a previous edition promising access to “all subsequent DLCs.”

The new Unheard Edition of the tactical online FPS comes packed with various items such as a digital copy of the game and closed beta access. However, it also grants players exclusive weapons and paid advantages like increased stash size, expanded PMC pockets, and additional flea market slots, leading to accusations of pay-to-win tactics by members of the community.

But what has truly sparked outrage is the addition of an exclusive co-op PvE mode, especially among those who bought the now-discontinued Edge of Darkness Edition, which guaranteed free access to all future DLCs. The community views this move as a betrayal of the initial promise made to early supporters of the game.

In response to fan criticism, Battlestate initially downplayed the concerns by arguing semantics. On Discord, a Tarkov community manager stated, “It ain’t DLC… PvE is a feature and a game mode, not additional downloadable content.” This dismissive response only served to further anger the player base and deepen the divide between Battlestate and its community.

Attempting to quell the backlash, Battlestate has offered additional unique items and paid advantages to owners of the Edge of Darkness Edition. However, the offer of limited offline access to the new PvE mode for only six months has not been well-received by players who expected permanent access to all future DLCs.

A Complicated Situation

The situation surrounding Escape from Tarkov’s Unheard Edition continues to escalate, with Battlestate seemingly pushing Edge of Darkness Edition owners towards a €120 paid upgrade to the new edition. This move has left many players feeling disillusioned, especially considering the significant investment they have already made in the game.

While Battlestate is aware of the community’s discontent, the studio’s response has been slow and calculated. Whether further concessions will be made remains to be seen as players wait to see how the situation unfolds.
