Insights from Jaakko Kylmäoja: Lessons for the Games Sector

Pocketgamer.biz: What is the most common mistake you see being made in the games sector?

Jaakko Kylmäoja: Short-term gains over long-term loyalty. Our approach has always been to prioritize the user experience. While utilizing monetization mechanisms that interrupt the game flow could bring in more revenue in the short term, we believe in fostering a large and loyal player base. With over 2 billion installations and 50 million monthly active users, we have a strong foundation when launching new games.

Pocketgamer.biz: What leaders/pioneers in games do you find inspiring?

Jaakko Kylmäoja: Housemarque has been a true inspiration to me. Their game Supreme Snowboarding was my favorite back in 1999. They consistently push the boundaries of what is possible on gaming devices. The work they did with Returnal after 26 years of establishing the company is something I deeply respect.

Pocketgamer.biz: What is your favorite mobile game of all time?

Jaakko Kylmäoja: QWOP by Foddy.net. This game is all about personal skills and development. My personal best in long jump is 3.67m.

Pocketgamer.biz: What do you enjoy most about working in the mobile games industry?

Jaakko Kylmäoja: I love collaborating with genuine and intelligent people in our company. The gaming industry in Finland has a culture of openness and fairness that I greatly appreciate. Additionally, through our games, we have the opportunity to bring joy and a sense of accomplishment to millions of people. It feels like we are making a meaningful difference, especially during challenging times.
