Mortal Kombat 1 confirms Smoke and Rain as returning playable fighters

Mortal Kombat 1 News: Smoke and Rain Confirmed as Playable Characters

The anticipation for the release of the sort-of-rebooted fighter, Mortal Kombat 1, continues to build as developer NetherRealm unveils more information. In the latest update, NetherRealm has confirmed that Smoke and Rain will be joining the roster as playable characters, along with the return of some familiar faces as assistive Kameos.

Confirmed Playable Characters

  • Johnny Cage
  • Kenshi
  • Kitana
  • Kung Lao
  • Liu Kang
  • Mileena
  • Raiden
  • Scorpion
  • Shang Tsung (available as a pre-order bonus)
  • Sub-Zero

In their latest Kombat Kast livestream, NetherRealm introduced two new additions to the Mortal Kombat 1 roster. Smoke, the assassin-turned-cyborg, makes his first playable appearance in the main series since the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot. Joining him is Rain, a moody demi-god who previously appeared as a DLC character in Mortal Kombat 11.

Assist-style Kameo Fighters

  • Cyrax
  • Frost
  • Scorpion
  • Sektor

In addition to the new playable characters, NetherRealm also confirmed a lineup of characters who will join Mortal Kombat 1 as assist-style Kameo Fighters. These include Cyrax, Frost, Scorpion, and Sektor. It’s worth noting that this second appearance of Scorpion (and the second appearance of Johnny Cage in the Kameo lineup) is allowed because Kameo fighters are considered “non-canon”.

Mortal Kombat 1, set in a “reborn” universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang, will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC when it launches on September 19th.
