1. Find a Gas Can

The easiest way to obtain gas in Project Zomboid is to locate a gas can. Gas cans can be found in various locations such as gas stations, sheds, storage lots, and car trunks. However, it is important to note that gas cans may not always be full and their remaining fuel can vary. You can check the remaining fuel of a gas can by hovering your mouse over it. Once you have obtained a gas can, you can use it to fuel your generator or refill your car.

2. Siphon Gas From Cars

If you find yourself running out of gas or unable to locate gas cans, you can siphon gas from other cars. To do this, ensure that you have an empty gas can in your inventory and are surrounded by cars. Approach a car and press the “E” key to check its remaining fuel. It is advisable to siphon gas from cars with higher fuel levels to save time. Stand next to a car and press the “V” key, then select the “Siphon Gasoline” option. Keep in mind that cars without any fuel will not display this option. Depending on the size of the car’s gas tank and the gas can’s maximum capacity (8 units), you can usually completely refill your gas can.

3. Siphon Gas From the Gas Station

If you find it difficult to fully refill your gas tank with gas cans, you can head to a gas station for refueling. Gas stations are typically located in the center of each starting location. Drive your car next to a gas pump and press the “V” key after exiting the vehicle. Select the “Refuel from Gas Pump” option. If the option is not available, try moving your car to the other side of the pump station. Alternatively, you can right-click on the gas pump and select “Take Fuel” => “Fill All” to fill all your gas cans. It is recommended to fill all your gas cans and store them in your car’s trunk for extended journeys.

How to Get Gas After Power is Out

Even when the power is out, you can still obtain gas by finding gas cans or siphoning from cars. However, accessing the gas pump at the gas station is only possible when the power is on. To restore power, you will need a generator. Ensure you have the following items in your inventory: a generator, a “How to Use The Generator” magazine, and a gas can with some fuel. Read the magazine to learn how to use the generator, then place the generator next to the gas pump (or within 20 tiles). Right-click on the generator and select “Connect Generator”. Check the fuel level of the generator and add fuel from the gas can if necessary. Finally, right-click on the generator and select “Turn On”. You can now use the gas pumps as usual. Keep in mind that the generator’s noise will attract zombies, so be prepared with melee weapons in case of an attack.
