Larian CEO Says It’s Not Wizards Of The Coast’s Fault It’s Not Making Baldur’s Gate 4

Last Week’s Announcement

Recently, Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, made an important revelation regarding the future of the widely acclaimed RPG Baldur’s Gate 3. It was announced that there would be no sequel to the game, and no additional DLC would be created for it. Addressing rumors surrounding this decision, Vincke clarified that the choice was made in the best interest of Larian Studios and was not influenced by Wizards of the Coast, the owner of Dungeons & Dragons.

“WOTC is not at fault for our change in direction,” Vincke stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “In fact, they have been incredibly supportive and cooperative, allowing us the creative freedom to pursue our vision. This decision was made because it aligns with Larian’s goals and objectives.”

Vincke’s Perspective

Discussing the decision further in a recent thread, Vincke acknowledged that the choice was unexpected but emphasized its importance. He explained, “While I understand there may be disappointment among fans who have grown to love our creation, every story has a natural conclusion, and Baldur’s Gate 3 has reached its completion. The team has evolved significantly through this project, and I am confident that this growth will be reflected in our future endeavors.”

Regarding the fate of Baldur’s Gate 3 and its beloved characters, Vincke assured the community that they are now in the hands of Wizards of the Coast, who he believes will honor their significance. He expressed bittersweet sentiments about bidding farewell to these characters while looking forward to applying the lessons learned in their creation to new projects.

Future Plans

Although Larian Studios has concluded its work on Baldur’s Gate 3, there are still updates in the pipeline, including enhanced mod support and new cinematics for various game endings. On a related note, Wizards of the Coast has turned to internal development teams for their upcoming Dungeons and Dragons-inspired video games, with Montreal-based Invoke Studios being one of their key collaborators. The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has provided valuable insights for Hasbro’s game studios, which will be utilized in their future projects.
